# Get started on testnet

> Connect your wallet, authorize private viewing, and complete your first shield and unshield on testnet.

This page takes you from a new connection to a funded private balance. You need a wallet that holds testnet gas and at least one supported token.

## Connect your wallet

Open the app and select **Connect Wallet**, or choose one of the available wallet connectors. Choose a connection method and connect the account you want to use. Confirm the account and the test network before you continue.

## Authorize private viewing

Create an Access Control Permit (ACP) and review the message in your connected wallet. Sign it to authorize your private-balance view. If you cancel, you can return to permit creation later. See [Create a viewing permit](/wallet/settings-and-permits/create-viewing-permit).

## Find your assets

Open **Tokens** and select an asset to review its public and private balances. Use a public balance for shielding or a public transfer. Use an available private balance for a private transfer or unshielding.

## Complete the whole flow

Shielding can include an approval before the shield transaction. Unshielding has three stages: Unshield, In progress, and Claim. Check the final state before you treat either operation as complete.

## Check the context before you sign

Before you sign, check the account, network, token, amount, and recipient or contract. Fees use the network's gas asset, so a token balance alone may not be enough to submit a transaction.
